Today I took my doggies on a walk on the new path that runs behind the neighborhood next to ours. It was fantabulous! I used to take Daisy to the field that is now adjacent to the path, but she would always roll in deer poo. I got tired of having to bathe her after our fun outing so we haven't been over there in a while.
Thankfully we now have the path!
We were all so happy. I was able to let Daisy's leash go so she could keep up as she wanted. She is the best, most loyal dog. I love turning back to see where she is to see her run to catch up with me.
Molly on the other hand would have been lost in the corn field after spotting the first bird. I would probably never see her again.
Poor Daisy can only go so far though. She was really struggling to keep up by the time we got home. She's getting to be my old lady dog. I can't even begin to think about losing her. She is so much more affectionate the older she gets too. I love that dog.
The best part about the path is that it is far enough away from the houses that I can sing to my ipod and no one will hear me. I love singing to Mumford and Sons.
We also had a fun dinner with Megan and her kids. Her husband is traveling so they spend Tuesday nights at Hoss' since kids eat for $.99. Madelyn and I ate for $10. Dan and Elijah were at karate. It works out well because Hoss' is two seconds away, the husbands don't care for it (the moms don't much either), but the kids have a blast and eat for cheap. The salad bar is yummy though.
Good times. I am tired now though. The days are catching up to me. And, I didn't sleep as well last night. After having another fire issue in my oven yesterday I was then dreaming that the house was going to burn down from the fire pit I just bought for Madelyn's party. I want to go back to the island I dreamed about the other night ...

Some Things
Halloween was fun. Poor Elijah fell at least 4 times. Wearing a venom costume with a mask did not make seeing any easier. He had fun though. Went with friends and his friend Ellie was a pumpkin. Elijah kept telling her how awesome her belly was. It was hilarious. At one house Elijah took forever sifting through their bowl of candy because he was saying, "Is all you have chocolate?" The people were very kind and patient, but I told him chocolate was good because I like chocolate. He's always afraid he is going to have a reaction to it because of the milk. Poor little guy. I told him to always err on the side of snickers if there is ever a doubt. He was a trooper. He had a matching venom candy holder so it was all good when he took his mask off to see better. He then called himself a venom ghost and all he needed to do was get rid of his own head so he would look headless. Oh my.
Madelyn was a sparkle witch. Again with no camera. Grrr. She was super cute with her dress and the green stars all over the sleeves and hat. I barely saw her because she was with a few of her friends and they were super fast hitting all the houses. Currently, her candy stash is sorted on the floor in her room. So funny.
We set aside the Almond Joy candy bars for my mom. She is the only person I know who likes them.
...............
I haven't inquired about the job since last week because I am having second thoughts about it. I think I still want it, but I know I would need to get paid more so I am just waiting to hear from them at this point.
..............
I ordered a starter kit from Thirty-One bags. I LOVE those bags, and I couldn't resist the black and white kit. SO pretty. Check it out www.MyThirtyOne.com/katetubbs I don't know how much selling I will do, but I will certainly LOVE the bags I get.

Today is my sister's birthday. Happy Birthday Shannon!! I think her birthdays have a bigger impact on me than my own. She's the same age as Dan, but it is harder for me to believe that she is 39 than the fact that he will be 39. Weird.
Either way, I hope she has a great day.
................
We had a snow storm on Saturday. It was still October then. We got at least 6 inches. I think it may have been closer to 8 according to reports though. Some areas near us got 14 inches. So strange. People are still without power. There was no school yesterday because of it. Some schools are still closed today, but we aren't. We have had 2 days off from school already that were like snow days and that was before November. Crazy. Hopefully people will get their power back on soon. Having lost it for 2 days during T.S. Irene I definitely feel their pain, only then it was still warm so heat wasn't an issue.
I have sworn to myself that we will get a kerosene heater in case this is any indication of what this winter will be like. All our stuff is electric so if we lose power this winter we will be frozen. The nice thing about this storm is that we knew it would be fairly warm the next day so it would melt a lot, and we could drive somewhere. In the winter that isn't the case. So, I will kick myself if we end up with no power and no heat source.
...............
I am getting closer to the point of feeling like it is time for Simon. My poor kitty. He's so thin and sickly looking. It's just making that dreaded appointment. He's on my lap now. He's so sweet and snuggly. He's always been my teddy bear kitty, good for snuggles, especially at night. It's just so hard to say that final good-bye. Ugh.
...............
We were able to get some FEMA assistance for our basement, not much, but it will definitely help. I think we have decided to cut the bottom part off of the paneling and replace it with drywall or wainscoting. It will be a job, but it will be nice when it is all done. I think.
We have our dumpster until Friday so we will be working on it tonight and tomorrow night.
...............
Speaking of which, I have a lot I should be doing so that's all for now ...

Dinner Conversation
I love our dinner times. You never know what is going to come up in conversation lately.
Tonight it was our grandchildren.
Recently Dan was baking and gave Madelyn a piece of baking chocolate as a joke. Poor thing. So, tonight when Dan was asking what kind of cake I wanted for my birthday he mentioned making funny cake which is what he was making that night with the chocolate.
Madelyn starts saying, "Don't trust the chocolate. Don't trust the chocolate." We were cracking up. Dan was telling her that she needs to do that to her children and I was coming out in defense of our poor grandchildren.
All this led to us telling them what to name their children. Oh my. Our poor children.
Madelyn said she doesn't know how many children she wants. Elijah said he thinks he'll have three. First he said he wants all boys, but then he said, "I don't really care what they are. I know it all depends on what God wants your babies to be." Oh my. We high fived over that one. He amazes me with what he comes out with concerning God. Both of them do. I love it.
Dan told Madelyn her girl would be named Rose and her boy would be Daniel. What? I didn't see why her girl couldn't be Kate. Then he tells Elijah his boy is going to be William and his girl would be Rose. Then when he said he was going to have three children he gave the third a silly name like Ting Tong Tubbs. The kids were belly laughing.
So funny. We laughed a lot. Elijah then got into the shower and we explained profit and loss to Madelyn with the example of a lemonade stand. It was cute to see her "get it." Now she wants to open a lemonade stand next year.
Our plan of having our children become independently wealthy so they can support us is paying off. Muhahahahahahaha!

dreams
holy moly. my dreams have been crazy lately.
last night i was shoe shopping at a really cool mall and i over heard a lady insult my outfit. i then realized i wearing cropped leggings with a mint green shirt that was longer in the back than the front and i came in barefoot hoping to find some cool shoes to wear through the mall. i left with a scarf and slippers.
then we went to a different part of the mall where outside the entrance to the arcade was a bunch of snow and a snowball machine that shot snowballs at you. it was crazy and a little dangerous because the machine went around in circles so you had to stay out of the way. i woke up after dan got hit and fell over. he was knocked out and i was trying to move him before the machine came around again.
after i fell back to sleep i dreamed i was hanging out with robert pattinson. he was filming some things. nice guy.
see? crazy.
the night before i dreamed about a friend we haven't heard from in a while and now i know why. he was with a new woman. i don't know where his wife was, but there was no introduction to the new woman. it was almost like he was pretending she was his wife. see? crazy. and that was only half of it. i can't even write the other part even though it was funny.
sometimes i am curious where my dreams come from. other times i would just like to forget them. i do know that the kids needs shoes for school. madelyn always looks cute in her legging outfits. i would not. i don't know about the snow machine except that dan has been going through some stressful things at work? and maybe that's where that was coming from? i don't know.
i should keep a dream journal. or, maybe not.

Tidbits
it turns out madelyn is a chatty cathy when she's in the kitchen baking with dan. super cute.
glad he's the baker and not me. i'm not a fan of baking. he is though which makes it a great daddy/kids activity :)
i am also glad that this isn't a regular activity since i would then weigh 300 lbs. seriously. that is ALL i would eat.
.........
pms is the pits. i think i do weigh 300 lbs just since last week. i am such an antisocial weepy munchy slug during this time. it's amazing how different you feel once it's all said and done.
tmi. i know.
........
i went running/walking again today finally. i did do the stepper the other day which is a nice alternative to when i can't get out of the house, but while the weather is nice i definitely want to be out as much as possible.
it was a gorgeous night tonight too, nice and cool. the sky was sooooooo pretty with the setting sun.
i've been looking forward to getting back into a routine since we've been back from vacation.
..........
i don't know what to call what i do when i exercise. i go back and forth between running and walking so should i call it ralking, runking, runalking, wunning? yeah. i think wunning is it. then i sound like i have a speech issue and people will think i am a runner. for some reason it seems more glamorous to be a runner. although there is a speed walker in our neighborhood who would put any runner to shame. she is tall and thin and i could never keep up with her even if i was running and she's probably old enough to be my mom.
ha ha! imagining me running to try to keep up with the super tall speed walker makes me laugh.
it's kind of like me trying to keep up with dan when we exercise together (or even simply walk, honestly), but thankfully he slows to my pace. he's nice like that.
.........
anxiety sucks.
i have a copy of my friends book "change your brain change your life." it's helpful.
but, ugh. anxiety is awful, awful, awful.
........
elijah LOVES legos right now.
currently he is online just looking at instructions for putting together sets that he doesn't have. sometimes he goes to bed reading the little instruction books :)
last night he asked me if it would be okay if he slept with some of his legos on the side of the bed he doesn't sleep on so he could wake up and get started on putting it all together right away. when i went to see just how many he was talking about i laughed. he had a MOUND of legos on his bed. so funny. he was a good sport about bagging them all up so none would get lost in the night.
.........
madelyn is going to the fair tomorrow with her bff alli. alli and her family are such a blessing. alli is an only child and loves to invite madelyn along for special events like this. they are such a great family too. it's so nice to have people you can completely trust your child with and whose daughter is such a nice friend to madelyn. even while we were on vacation madelyn would say, "i can't wait to tell alli about this" or "i can't wait to show alli this!" friends are the best.
.........
the erwins are coming on wednesday!!!! yay!!!! this has been the summer for catching up with our maryland friends :D it's been sooooooooooo nice i can hardly stand it!! i love and miss them all so much.
.........
laundry never ends .... BUT i am grateful for washing machines and dryers.
the end.

Church Mouse
Yesterday I was waiting for a call back from the pediatrician's office. You see, Madelyn has strep and that is how we started out our beach vacation. So, let's just take a moment and praise the Lord for pharmacies at the beach. CVS to be exact.
Anyway, the nurse calls back. I answer the phone and in this sweet happy voice she says, "Hi! This the the doctor's office calling. Can I speak to Mom?" Um. Last I checked I am the "mom." She was a bit embarrassed when she realized this.
So, apparently I still have a church mouse voice. A lady I called one time told me that. Nice, huh?
It got even stranger when Nick and Todd came home from a walk. Todd came in first and I said, "Hey, where have you guys been? It's been forever." To which Nick said, "Who is that? Madelyn?" Yes. Strike two. The second time in one day I was mistaken for a kid.
Oh well. What can I do? I laughed. It was funny, especially when I told Todd and Nick the story about the nurse and Todd asked me if I then got my mom. ha ha!
Good times :)

Random Thoughts ...
because that's what i do.
Why do kittens have to be so cute? We met some cute little kittens last weekend. I picked the fluffy one. Madelyn picked the boy one. We came home with none. I do still have 4 animals and Dan cut me off at 4 animals long ago and I continue to say how wise that man is as a result.
Still. Cute cute kitties ... (sigh). I am so weak.
....................
Speaking of cute kitties, my Simon is struggling. He throws up, and he has lost a lot of weight. But, he is still so snuggly and in love with me. I can't just say good-bye. Yet. I know the time is coming pretty quickly though. So sad. 14 years is a long time to spend with a kitty. My mom used to call him and his brother the grandkitties. Seriously. They were my babies for a very long time.
So, as much as I say no more cats when both of mine are gone, I know that is a load of BS. Last weekend with the kitties is evidence A. All that had to happen was one of the kids beg for one. Thankfully, that didn't happen, but if we didn't have 4 animals, I probably would have been begging for the fuzzy little creamsicle looking kitty.
I heard she may be spoken for now though. Thank you Jesus.
...............
I like music. I just got 20 free songs from iTunes. Good times. Elijah asked, "Did you get new music?" That kid doesn't miss a thing. What makes music even more fun is when the kids get into it too. So far their faves are my faves. That works out nicely :)
..............
I learned that Madelyn does NOT want to be cremated. Odd info to know from an 8 year old. I know. But, I told her that Simon was probably going to have to be put to sleep soon. We had talked about this before, but I wanted to make sure she knew that it may be one day that I just have to take him in. She was sad, but took it okay. Then she asked what happens after they put him to sleep. That turned into a whole discussion about cremation, ashes, death, rotting in your grave, etc. Lovely. I know.
She did not like the idea of being burned after death and made it very clear that she doesn't want that to happen to her. I love the conversations she and I have about things. She is so thoughtful and understands so much at this stage. She is so much like her dad too. She's got a strong mind about her. I admire that in a girl :)
......................
Elijah on the other hand is very glad he is not a girl because he does not have to push a baby out one day.
But, he is a boy so that means he has to ask a girl to marry him one day and he is very concerned that she might say no. I explain to him that he will most likely be with that girl for a while before they that point so he should know if she will say yes or not. He comforts himself by saying he is not in college yet so he doesn't have to worry about it.
Poor thing. He's going to go to college feeling like not only does he have to figure out what he wants to do for the rest of his life he also has to find a wife. That's a lot of pressure.
.................
Drama. Drama. Drama. That's all I have to say about that.
Except it's not.
People need to learn to talk to people. If there is an issue, talk to the person. Don't conjure up all these crazy ideas about what you think is going on. It will simplify things.
Okay. Now I am done.
For now.
.................
I like friends. God has blessed us with some amazing friends.
................

I love his mind. You never have to guess what he is thinking.

randomness ... big time
i have had a lot of stuff going on in my brain lately. i don't feel like i can form one long coherent thought, but i feel like i need to get some of it out. so, here goes ...
+ elijah used to say "a million bazillion 61" when referring to something that was a lot until a friend in school told him it wasn't a real number. well, now he is a number snob. if someone says "a million bazillion" he is quick to tell us that isn't a real number. i reminded him of what he used to say and he just kind of blew it off by repeating "it's not a real number." so, i thought i needed to write it down so i didn't forget he said it because it was really cute when he did.
+ madelyn is going to another sleepover this weekend. seriously. this girl's social life is more exciting than mine. it's her friend's birthday so she was invited to go to sight & sound with her friend and then spend the night. she has been so excited for weeks. you would think it was her birthday! i haven't even been to sight & sound before!! i am excited for her. it is her best friend who is an only child and they are a really nice family. but man. i don't like sending her away over night. things just seem off balance at home. i am happy for her, but sad for me. would it be strange to follow them all afternoon and evening? oh. i thought so.
then i have elijah who is already sad at the thought of his sister being gone over night on friday. oh, but that's not all. saturday she is going to a friends house to play for that friend's birthday. she is literally going to be toast on saturday after no sleep and all that people time. she needs a break from people after a while.
man do i love that girl. she is getting nuttier and nuttier by the day and it does my heart good, just a reminder that she did indeed come from me. her nuttiness and green eyes - from me :) otherwise, she has a strong mind like her father which i am grateful for. i honestly am so blessed to have that little darling of a girl in my life. seriously.
+ money ... this was my thought the other day ... if i had a lot of money, what would i buy? here is my answer ... a fence for the dogs to run around in, get my teeth redone ($4500!!!?? ugh.), buy plane tix to go see all those family members and friends we never get to see because flying 4 people is expensive :( ... and that was pretty much the extent of my list. i don't think i am asking for too much. i will be getting my teeth redone soon i believe though because well, after 20 years we are already pushing it. but, it looks like we will be financing it. that stinks. we don't even have a car payment, but we will soon have a tooth payment. silly.
+ man oh man is God working in me. lent is always a time for God to work in me since i have practiced it for the last 3 years now, but this all started even before lent. wanna hear it? in a nutshell God has been showing me more and more my need for a savior. i am so imperfect and sinful and am now super humbled.
+ don't you love when you bond with people in a huge way unexpectedly. that happened recently. having struggled through bouts of horrible OCD thoughts it is always an intense moment when you meet someone who suffers as well. it's like this special bond you have, but can only talk about so much because you don't want to trigger any awfulness, but it's horrible too because you wouldn't wish it on anyone, but again we are all broken aren't we and need each other so you are grateful when you can share in that brokenness with others. it's certainly very very weird, but good in the same way. it kind of makes my heart ache.
BUT, this is what i am learning more and more in this thing called life and not just life, but life as a christian. it is ALL about Christ. and, it is all about relationships. you can't have true relationships if you pretend to have it all together. it will only be a matter of time before your brokenness will show through your pretendness (i know, not a word). then what are you going to do? so, you may as well be real from the get go.
okay, now i am stepping down from my high horse of brokenness ... ha ha.
(remind me to post the towel head story)
+ okay, i think that is all for now. i am going to go type up the towel head story. it's a fun one.

slumber parties
slumber parties are great, or are they?
i am so happy that madelyn is feeling more comfortable with sleeping away at someone else's house, or am i?
okay, enough with the annoying questions. madelyn is wrecked after her sleepover. she is my little introverted girl so she definitely needs her downtime, away from people, whether it's after school or after a long week. sleepovers however don't allow for any downtime for approximately 19 hours, and this is after a long week of school. that is too long for my little dumpling.
add onto that the fact that she gets zero sleep. she is wrecked. so, now she is quietly playing barbies in her room so she can regroup, recharge, whatever you want to call it.
i knew we didn't have plans for today so it was okay for her to sleepover. we do have plans for tomorrow though that involves ten kids being here. that should be interesting.
as far as me liking sleepovers, i'm still on the fence. i am glad madelyn is feeling more comfortable being at someone's house, but i don't like it for one. i miss her. our house seems off when one is missing. two, i just don't like it. i miss her. oh, did i mention that already?
okay, seriously, if i don't know the family well or have any reservations the sleepover just won't happen. i almost told her she couldn't sleepover last night because she is getting over strep, but i didn't. they had a lot of fun so it was all good. the problem is she won't nap. i told her she is going to have to lie down for a while, but i doubt she will fall asleep. she just doesn't do naps.
i do though. i actually just did :) ahhhhh, glorious naps. i'm not sure why madelyn is so down on them. i actually napped in her bed and it is still comfortable. so, i think she's missing out by not napping.
that won't keep me from trying to get her to from time to time.
UPDATE : To my shock and disbelief Madelyn did indeed fall asleep. She looked so snuggly and cute too under her little Hello Kitty blanket that Dan gave her when he went to Africa. It says I Love You on it. She still went to sleep at a decent time too. I was shocked, but so glad she did. We have a fun day planned today with friends from college.

a couple cute elijahisms
today elijah came downstairs to the living room where i was sitting. he didn't know i was here so it was cute to watch him work his way down holding and facing the railing with two hands, imagining some super hero scenario i'm sure. he gets to the bottom of the stairs i said hello to him. he comes over to snuggle, but has a straight face on the whole time. i said, "wow. such a straight face you have. no smiles or anything." he said, "oh. let me try that again." he goes ALL the way back upstairs, comes down to see me with the biggest grin, says hello and runs over to me all happy and smiley. he is my sunshine kid. very rarely does he stay in a sour mood. it was so cute!
tonight after we read together we were just snuggling on the couch. i said, "i am so glad you are a snuggly boy. some kids don't want to snuggle with their moms very much, but you do and i am glad." he said, "mommy, are you being serious?" he could not understand why some kids would not want to snuggle.
lately i have had a lot of moments where both kids have come to sit with me on our big green chair in the living room. i don't ever want to get up when i have the two of them all snuggled up with me. i was thinking tonight as dan carried them both at the same time up to bed for stories and praying how sad it will be when they are too big to be carried at all.
so, i will enjoy these moments and snuggles as long as i can. i am very blessed.

tidbits
my kids had their first sleepover last weekend with the holt family. they had fun. it was weird for me. such an unsettled feeling knowing there were no children upstairs in my house sleeping. i had crazy dreams, etc. i knew they were fine and safe and happy, but dan and i both agree they are now allowed to live at home forever.
..................
i got bit by a gnat today during the field trip to the apple orchard with elijah's class. they were attacking my eyes. two made it into my right eye and another bit me under my left eye. it started to swell and gradually got worse as the day went on. i just took 3tsp of children's benedryl. i think i will sleep well tonight even if i do wake up with a swollen face.
UPDATE: it's the next day and my eye is still swollen. it is better, but now it hurts a little and is still a bit itchy. so bizarre.
..................
things are really good right now and don't think for one second that i am taking that for granted. those years of so many doc appts and not knowing what was going on with dan left their mark. i know that things can change in an instant so i will enjoy this time while i can.
...................
madelyn is growing up and i am not sure how i feel about that. she is just starting to look and act a lot older. it's hard to put into words. it is a good thing and i really just enjoy her so much. she has a funny little personality and is really smart. my plan of turning her into a little freakazoid so she fits in nicely with our family is working splendidly. she really is a nut. i have to get a video of her doing her eyebrow thing. didn't i mention that before? even though she is growing up so much i do enjoy relating to her on a different level now. that part really has been fun. we crack each other up.
.....................
so, i readily admit that this is a little weird, but i asked elijah if dan and i could move into his room with him. he has the biggest bedroom in the house with two closets no less, a ceiling fan, etc. and only 3 pieces of furniture. we could skate around his room if we wanted. he was so sweet though and said, "but i only have two pillows." he wasn't really sure what to think about it. we just laughed and told him it would be okay because we would move our bedroom furniture in as well.
we won't really move into his room (not until he goes to college). just want to be clear on that.
....................
elijah saw my retainer in the toothbrush drawer tonight and asked me if i took my teeth out.

Tidbits
I am so proud of Elijah. First of all he is doing well with Kindergarten. He doesn't love it. He can't tell me why, but he goes every day without complaining and he is doing his work faithfully. So, speaking of work I realized that on all of his papers he was writing the h in his name backwards. I mentioned this to him one day thinking he would probably forget and I would have to remind him. Well, I didn't because he didn't! I check his paper the next time and praised him for remembering to turn his h around. He told me that he checks the letters up on the wall to make sure he is writing them correctly. WHAT?! I am so proud of him for being pro-active about this. His perfectionism is paying off ;)
.............................
Madelyn. My dear sweet Madelyn. She cracked us and herself up in the car last night. The kids were singing "Down by the Bay" and you know the part where they have to say something that rhymes ... well, Madelyn says, "Have you ever seen a bird .... (long pause) ... with a coo coo turd?" ha ha ha ha ha ha hahahahahah ha! She then says, "What is a turd anyway?" We told her and she laughed and laughed and laughed with that great laugh she has. Oh I love it. If only I could bottle it up, or upload it to my ipod. Hey, maybe I will record it an upload it. Oh, it was so funny.
.............................
We finally found a vehicle to buy. It is a huge trailblazer with a third row. It is hard to say good-bye to my van. It was snatched away from me so violently. I don't like that one bit. Now mind you, my van had issues of its own, but it was mine and I knew how to work it. We liked it. But, now we will have to become acquainted with a new monster of a vehicle. It's okay though. I like that it is big for safety reasons and ego reasons ( ha ha! i thought that would be funny so I wrote it as if my ego will be boosted with having the biggest vehicle on the block. with that comes the biggest gas bill so whose laughing now? waaaahhhhh.) We are supposed to go pick it up tonight and pass off all our money to the car guy.
Speaking of the car guy. He is a wonderful wonderful Christian man. He gives us such great deals on the 2 cars that we have now bought from him. He even prayed with Dan on the phone when Dan called and explained to him what happened. So sweet. And, he has such a great business. There is a cafe with free popcorn, ice cream, and soda. A playroom. A wii. A tv. I mean really. Dan and I are going for date night there next time we get a sitter. So, go to Pottsville and buy a car from Bob Weaver. You won't regret it because even when your car has an issue they give you a car to drive or you can hang out in their fabulous shop there gaining weight by eating all the yummies.
.......................
My boy is so in love with me. He wants to marry me. I love it. Dan says it won't last forever and that one day it will be other girls he is noticing. Whatever. Stupid girls. Stealing my thunder.
......................
Now that my kids are older I have been able to help out at the school more. That's fun. I helped in 3rd grade today for 20 minutes until it was time to get Elijah. It was fun being with a couple 3rd grade girls and helping them on the computer. They were making a crossword puzzle and I couldn't type worth a darn. I kept messing up and then I would say, "Why can't I type today?" and they would say, "We don't know!" So fun :)
Yesterday I helped after school with the King's Club, the after school program. When I walked in and told them I was in charge that day a few girls cheered. How's that for confidence boosting? They are cute 5th grade girls. I am going to help every monday now so that will be fun to get to know them better.
.............................
Right now I am procrastinating on finishing the projects I have started and haven't finished yet so I should probably go do that. Oh, and running and me have not been getting along. I am mad that he kept kicking my patootie so I have been ignoring him even though he keeps calling me. I am going to try again tomorrow, but I am not happy about it. I just don't like feeling like a loser. Ugh. Stupid running and your stupid challenges you bring my way. Grrrr ...

Madelyn
My dear sweet tender-hearted Madelyn.
She made a birthday card for Dan (his b-day is on the 28th) and had all of her classmates sign it for him. She gave it to Dan yesterday. I thought that was so sweet.
She has been opening up to me a lot lately. When I say a lot I mean absolutely positively pouring her heart out to me about all things under the sun. I love it mostly. I only say mostly because I hate the fact that my innocent girl is discovering that the world isn't all sunshine and princesses and bunnies and puppies and kittens and happiness and whole as she has known it to be most of her life.
She's discovering and questioning and I am thrilled she is okay with doing all that with me. Life is rough and it's easier to go through it with someone whose got your back.
The other day she told me she had things she wanted to talk to me about. It turns out that PollyAnna, you know the one from the book, is an orphan. Her parents die. This got Madelyn thinking about life if I died. (Oh my goodness just tear my heart out and feed it to the dogs.)
Hear is my little girl all teary eyed with this weight on her that I had no idea about. I told her that yes it would be very sad if something happened to me, but she has a whole big family who loves her and would do their best to take care of her and that's when she lost it. Crying in my arms over the thought of her parents dying. I finally just told her that so far I am doing okay. I am healthy as far as I know and Lord-willing I will be around for a long time. I assured her that meant that she will grow up, get married, have children, and I will definitely still be trying to tell her what to do through all of it to the point I will drive her crazy. That's what moms are for right? That got her giggling.
When they say still waters run deep they aren't kidding. I have always known there was a lot going on her head. She is very thoughtful about things and internalizes a lot of things. I wondered if it wouldn't all come pouring out eventually. I have to say I really am glad they did. I feel like I know her that much better now and we have a stronger bond because of it. I praise God for this and He has helped stabilize the heart attacks that come on during some "discovery conversations" so that I am still able to speak. My little girl is growing up!

Elijah, the Town Crier
Or, the K4 Crier.
I seriously believe that he sees it as his duty to be the crier of the class. His teacher Mrs. Shrom, or Jane as I sometimes call her, told me today that he was crying so hard yesterday and wouldn't calm down. Finally she told him that he was going to have to sit in time out if he didn't stop and he immediately turned off the water works. She could not believe it. She was at the point where she was ready to go get Dan because he just was not calming down.
He is so theatrical. Yesterday when I asked him if he cried in class he said yes as in, "of course I did." One day he told me it's because that's what he does in his K4 class. But, I told him he didn't HAVE to cry. He is still trying to understand that.
Meanwhile, he LOVES K4 and is so bummed when Friday comes and he doesn't get to go to school that day. He cannot wait to go to school in the morning and is so happy to be there. Silly boy.
Madelyn of course is doing great and is just in her element when she is in school. And, she is riding the bus home which is just so fun. Seeing her little face in the window in the front seat as the bus pulls up to our house just melts my heart, and she waves to me. I just love it. It's my favorite time of day.

Chatting with Friends
I love girls, especially almost 7 year olds. Madelyn had a Birthday party to go to on Saturday for a friend from school. We took Madelyn's friend Isabelle with us. We love Isabelle. She is so cute, and she is close to Madelyn's age. They are the two youngest in their class. Isabelle turns 7 in November.
Anyway, I had them in the car and they were talking as if I was no where around. The conversations went something like this ...
I: I have only told 1 lie.
M: I have told 2.
I: Yeah, I have told 2 also.
I was really curious what those lies were, but I didn't ask. I didn't want them to know I could hear them.
They got a lot of candy from the party so on the way home they were eating some. They pulled out the cinnamon hard candies and each ate one.
I: This is REALLY cinnamony.
M: I know!
I: I am going to spit mine out.
M: I don't want to waste mine because it's candy, and candy is just SO good.
I: Well, I am going to put mine back in the wrapper so that I can eat it later because sometimes you just want that sweet taste!
They just sounded so grown up, but still so cute!

Is September really almost here?
My boy is starting K-4 this year. Hard to believe. I keep telling him things that he can and can't do in school trying to prepare him for the classroom setting. For instance, he kissed a kid on the shoulder at swimming lessons the other night. I called him over and explained to him that he just can't kiss his classmates and that the same rule applies to K-4. He said okay and as he was walking back to the pool he turned around, put his arms in the air, smiled big and said, "But they can kiss me!!" Oh boy.
He just loves to hug and kiss people. He loves to sit on people and talk to them, sometimes taking their face in his hands while he is talking to them or asking them a question. It's very sweet, but the older he gets I am trying to teach him about personal space. He is catching on, but last weekend at Dan's parents' church he was greeting the pastor after church. He went to hug the pastor and said, "I can't stop hugging!" I love his personality and his love of life and people. Plus, I can always count on him for a laugh.
So, school should be interesting for my little boy. I am excited for him and for all that he will learn. I know his teacher is wonderful and she absolutely loves her job so I know he will be well-cared for and loved. It is also comforting to know that Dan will be right upstairs. That is a huge blessing. I am really spoiled with our schooling situation, to be less than ten minutes away and have Dan there is just a wonderful thing.
On a related note ...
Madelyn is going to be a 2nd Grader! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How did this happen?? I filled out the re-enrollment forms I had a mini-heart attack. I handed them in to the school and one night Dan came home and said, "So, I saw Madelyn's form and when I saw the 2 for her grade I had to do a double take." So, we both shared a "holy crap our life is passing us by like the speed of light" moment. Granted, we started the girl in school early so it's our fault, but still! She's in second grade!! I'm sure I will freak out every year over this type of thing probably for the rest of her life, but don't we all?
I have been trying to convince her to drop out of school and just do what I like to call Snuggle School at home. Basically we sit on the couch and snuggle all day pretending life isn't passing us by and maybe watch a video here and there. She's not going for it, not even with the lure of a video.
She is a brave girl though. She is going to ride the bus home from school this year. This is huge for Madelyn. I have driven her the past two years, but with Elijah being half day, that's 3 separate trips there and back that I will have to make to the school. And, this year I will have one of Elijah's classmates with me in the afternoons twice a week. So, it will just be nice to not have to make that extra trip. She is fine with it though. She knows some of the kids who will be on the bus, and it is a less than 15 minute ride. I, or Dan, will still drive them to school because the bus doesn't take K-4 students so it's all good.
All in all, it's a big year for us on the school front. EEK!

Madelyn Loves Jesus
I think I mentioned in my last post that I believe Madelyn loves Jesus, and I truly believe she does.
We are reading through the Chronicles of Narnia with her ... again, and we are finishing up The Lion Witch and the Wardrobe. Well, we were reading about Aslan being killed, and I stopped to ask her if she knew about Aslan being a symbol of Jesus, and she said yes. So, I assumed that she and Dan had covered that at some point.
I was wrong.
She goes on to say that she read her children's version of the book (thanks again Kim!) and while she was reading that she thought, "Hey, that's like Jesus!" She then went on and basically shared the gospel story with me about Jesus dying on the cross and taking our place.
I was almost speechless. We then went on to talk about the reason for offerings in the OT and she mentioned Cain and Abel and why did Cain kill Abel, etc. It was so great! Her little mind is amazing to me. She retains so much information. I love it.
And, she's so great about telling stories and reading to Elijah. So, the one day she was telling him all about the Easter story. She is everything to him these days so he loves it. She can do no wrong in his eyes.
Having children is an amazing thing. It is so fun getting to know them and to share God's wonders with them.
Praise God from Whom ALL blessings flow ...

My Little Reader

Madelyn has ALWAYS LOVED reading. We read to her even as a tiny baby. She is not a sleeper so to help her settle at night we would leave books in her crib for her to look at instead of screaming at us (not kidding, she would scream, and the books didn't always help). We started with cloth books because they were safe. Then on to board books until finally she could flip through regular books without ripping the pages out of boredom.
This has been the routine since I can remember. There were nights she would still be up flipping through books when we were ready to go to bed. We'd have to cut her off.
Even now I have to tell her to lie down while she reads her books or else she is up half the night.
My girl loves to read. That's all there is to it. It's in her blood. The blood from her father that is. I don't mind reading, but I don't read to fill an addiction as those two seem to do.
So, no surprise really when Madelyn one night told us she was going to read to us instead of us reading to her. Um, okay. And, she did. That's my girl. When she sets her mind on wanting to do something she is going to do it.
That was the summer of 2007. She was 4 and was reading fluently with expression, the whole deal by the end of that summer.
Okay, so all this to say that the other night on our way to the Good Friday service at church Madelyn was a little chatter box. She told me how she got her dormer all set up with pillows and books and coloring books. I told her that was great because then she could really use that space for things she loves. Mostly we end up throwing pillows and stuffed animals up there.
Anyway, she then says, "Yeah, I don't know why, but I am really into reading lately." .... Um ... I had to just giggle silently to myself. The girl has been "into reading" since she was old enough to hold a book! I love it.
Although I have to say that lately she is flying through books like crazy. Of course, she's not getting as much sleep, but she just finished The Wizard of Oz, a chapter book with 11 chapters in 2 nights! Craziness.
Back to the Good Friday service, she wasn't really into the service so she asked me where the Easter story was in the Bible. I showed her to Mark and she sat and read the Bible through the service. She loves Jesus. She is always drawing crosses and writing little things about thanking Jesus for dying on the cross. So sweet.
That's my girl.

Kid-isms
Dan took the kids to the Library the other day. The library is near the river so at one point the road dead ends with a yellow fence just after where you need to turn right to go to the library. One of the kids asked what would happen if they drove through the yellow fence. Dan said, "We'd end up in the river." To which Madelyn replied, "Yeah, and none of us can swim!" ha ha ... it's true. Dan can't swim either.
I do think though if they survived the crash over the bank into the river that Dan could stand at that part of the river, but either way I don't want my family crashing into the river by any means. Of course, we did have this conversation though. We also realized that at that point the river was quite high because we got a lot of rain the day before. Isn't it funny how a joke can turn into a real discussion of just what would happen if ...
................................
The kids and I were home the other day. Madelyn and I were in the living room and Elijah was upstairs. Next thing I hear Elijah yelling to someone out the window about coming over. Now, knowing my son and how social he is, I wouldn't be surprised if he saw the neighbor girl or even a stranger and invited them over.
So, I yell up to him and ask him who he is talking to. He said, "The robin! ... Hi robin! Are you coming to my house today?" It was so cute. Madelyn and I cracked up.
Later I heard him say, "Robin, did you go somewhere?" He couldn't see the robin anymore. This was the same day we saw the beautiful rainbow.
The weather had been so crazy that day. We had a ton of rain all morning where it was so dark you felt like it was evening. Then by the time I picked Madelyn up from school the sun was out again and it was quite warm out. They played outside for a bit and then more rain and wind. Then more sun! Then the beautiful rainbow which made it all worth it.
A friend of mine mentioned on FB that it was like a disney movie with the rainbow and the bunnies. It cracked me up. She asked if we broke out into song :) I told her if the birds and the bunnies let me pet them I would have because then I would have known that I really was snow white.

This is what happens when ...
you send two little children upstairs to get ready for bed and to take the sheets off of one of their beds ...
First, you see this at the top of the stairs (oh my!) ... it seems to be every pillow out of Madelyn and Elijah's rooms ...

Here is the live version of it ...
Now Elijah asks me every day if he and Madelyn can take her mattress off and use it like a slide again. We knew they were having a good time upstairs, but we had no idea we would find what we found :)
